“Энергетик – Energetik” by Nicolas Badout – NKL

How is a landscape made, unmade, created or recreated?
In an attempt to answer this question, the artist-illustrator Nicolas Badout presents here a new series of illustrations, in the continuity of the 16th Biennial of Contemporary Art in Lyon and its theme “Manifesto of Fragility”.
He wished to evoke the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 26 April 1986, which made the whole world aware of the risks induced by the manipulation of atomic energy and the severity of its damage on a regional and planetary scale, but also on bodies and minds. This event takes on a new meaning today with the war in Ukraine, and the regular strikes on the Zaporizhia power plant, reminding us of our own fragility.
As the main subject and in resonance with the architecture of the Market Station, the Palace of Culture “Energetik”, a majestic ruin located in the city centre of Pripyat, appears as a silent witness of the catastrophe and the flight of its inhabitants.
Like photographs, these images travel through different eras – past, present and future – evoking the passing of time and questioning the destruction and deterioration, accidental or voluntary, of a landscape.
But these works also reveal the blossoming and rebirth of new landscapes, where flora and fauna are once again taking up residence in a world that has been largely anthropised.
